BC is raising the fines for truck drivers not using chains when required and it will hopefully lead to better compliance.
Drivers will now be fined $196 for not carrying chains when and where required, and $598 for not installing chains during mandatory chain-ups.
BC Trucking Association President Dave Earl says the vast majority of drivers are taking the necessary precautions, but there are a few that don’t.
“But all it takes is one or two of course and the entire route gets clogged up. The question is, is this going to reach those one or two. Time is going to tell. I don’t know that there were a lot of people who were sitting back and doing a cost benefit analysis, but 600 bucks for not chaining up, that’s going to get your attention.”
Earl says he is also happy with the broader action the government is taking particularly on the Coquihalla.
“Drivers that drive up that route now will see a very large chain up area at the bottom of box canyon. That type of facility really supports drivers in getting out of their vehicles and putting chains on in a safe location. Not pulling over on the side of the highway in a really congested location.”
Earl says its pleased with increase enforcement, increased fines and the increased support. “Happy that the fines are increasing and also happy on the broader action the government has taken particularly on the Coquihalla.”
The new fines take effect Tuesday, October 1st.
