A silent procession involving climate activists happened outside the Trans Mountain storage yard in Kamloops today.
The Red Brigade, a local extension of the Extinction Rebellion, had nearly a dozen members dressed in costume to protest for climate action.
“This was not timed to have anything to do with the Canadian federal election. It’s kind of good timing for us that the election is happening because it raises awareness of the pipeline construction as an election issue. But this is international day of Extinction Rebellion, so those of us who are unwilling to watch 200 species a day go extinct, which is currently what’s happening,” spokesperson Katie Welch says.
“It’s very difficult to say whether there’s a political solution in Canada to this. The Green Party’s the only party that’s been vocal, absolutely adamant and unequivocally not wanting the pipeline.”
Welch says she doesn’t know the politics of other people involved, but she says The Red Brigade has picked up traction since she started the group two weeks ago.
