The BC Wildfire Service plans to burn piles of woody debris near Williams Lake over the next eight weeks as part of a project to reduce the risk of wildfires in the area.
The piles have already been collected at both Fox Mountain and near Airport Road, which the Wildfire Service says will reduce the amount of fuel available in the event of a wildfire.
The Fox Mountain burn will cover about 20.4 hectares north of the Fox Mountain subdivision, north of Gannet Road and Pheasant Drive, while Airport Road will cover about three hectares south of Williams Lake airport, southeast of the junction of Radio Range Road and Airport Road.
Wildfire Service personnel will be on site monitoring these burns as smoke and flames may be visible from Williams Lake and some surrounding communities.
As well, the piles of debris will only be lit if the conditions are suitable, while allowing for quick smoke dissipation.
#BCWildfire crews plan to burn piles of woody debris near #WilliamsLake over the next 8 weeks as part of an ongoing project to reduce wildfire risks in the area. The controlled burns could resume as early as Oct. 9, 2019.
