A pilot project from ICBC that’s supposed to bring down the ever rising rates for new drivers is coming to fruition but the opposition doesn’t think Telematics can fix a much bigger problem.
Speaking on the NL Morning News, Jas Johal, the Liberal opposition ICBC critic, said people just can’t deal with skyrocketing car insurance rates. “That’s the problem right now, five, six thousand dollars a year for insurance does not work for the average British Columbian and that’s what we should be caring about.”
Johal said any time you can encourage safety to lower rates is wonderful but he thinks the whole system needs an overhaul. “What we’ve said from day one now is that we’ve had a public insurance system here since the 1970’s. We need a thorough review of experts looking at everything top to bottom, this whole insurance company that we have, that we own, and say how do you fix it?”
As far as fixing things goes, Johal asks. “Is there a hybrid system perhaps? Is there greater involvement for the private sector? So nothing should be sacred what so ever. We need to be looking at the entire system and find the best system that works for all British Columbians.”
