It is Halloween and Kamloops RCMP want everyone to stay safe.
Corporal Jodie Shelkie says to make sure costumes are visible at night and look both ways before crossing the street. “So don’t zig-zag back and forth. Sometimes kids get really excited and they see a house that look promising or really exciting and they’ll run across the street, they will dart out and that’s really not safe. So, really stress to children that they need to do one side of the block, cross in a safe manner, and then do the other.”
Shelkie also suggests safety in numbers. “Have your trick-or-treaters travel in a group or with a parent or older adult and tell them that they should only eat things that are in unopened wrappers. So when they get home stress to them that an adult is going to go through all of the candy and make sure that it’s safe.” Shelkie says it’s always good advice to check candy for tampering. “It has happened in other communities on occasion, but thankfully it hasn’t happened in Kamloops in quite a while if at all. It is just a good way to instill with them to be cautious about what they’re receiving from potential strangers.”
Shelkie also suggests double checking your lawn and driveway to make sure there are no tripping hazards.
