It’s been a slower week at bottle depots in Kamloops in anticipation of most non-alcoholic beverage container deposits doubling to 10 cents on November 1.
However, the manager of General Grants in Kamloops, Richard Robertson, says part of the reason for slowdown this week is the weather.
“Because when its colder our business is very weather related, and we see it slow down like that, but everybody is of course eager to cash in on the increased deposit rates, so they’re kind of hanging on to them,” he told NL.
Robertson says he expects this weekend will be a busy one, but he’s not anticipating the need to have extra staff on hand.
“We always stock a little heavier on the weekends because the business is generally busier on weekends,” he added. “We’re moving into a slow period anyhow over the next six weeks, it kind of tails off as the weather changes, and then we get to Christmas, and then of course things start going up again. It will all balance out.”
And Robertson says he’s not anticipating a financial hit because of the increased deposits.
“We are cleaning out our inventories this evening, and I’ll get paid for that product at 5 cents,” Robertson said. “And then starting tomorrow, any product that I buy I’ll be paid back 10 cents.”
