A Kamloops City Councillor says it is important that there be good communication between the city and residents about the Performing Art Centre project.
Sadie Hunter was speaking ahead of the referendum that will ask residents for approval to borrow $45 million over 25 years for this project.
She says even if people end up voting against the Performing Arts Centre, it’s important that they have accurate information before they head to the polls.
“When I look online I see a lot of misinformation or maybe not fully informed information in the dialogue and conversation,” she said. “Really, what my goal is, is to provide the factual information so that when are going to the polls, hopefully they do have the accurate information.”
Hunter adds the city will likely have to engage with the residents about this project ahead of the vote that will likely happen in March. The city estimates the referendum will cost about $120,000.
“The budget for the referendum is really just to support everything that is required in terms of how to vote and the dates, really just the logistical parts of it,” Hunter said. “But there is not a budget to communicate information about the project and to engage with the community in a meaningful way. And I think that that was really missing last time.”
“I think it’s our due diligence as a council who is supporting this to make sure that this information is out there.”
The question for the referendum has not been set, but it is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.
