The BC government says seniors in Clearwater in need of affordable homes will soon have access to 20 new units.
A development by Evergreen Acres Senior Housing Society will see three single-storey rowhouse-style buildings with 18 one-bedroom and two two-bedroom units at 144 Evergreen Place in Clearwater.
“Seniors on fixed incomes deserve the security and peace of good, secure housing, knowing they have the option to stay in their community,” said Housing Minister Selina Robinson. “It’s great to see the community of Clearwater come together to get this project off the ground. It will be a place where seniors can age in place, close to friends and loved ones.”
The Evergreen Acres Senior Housing Society is getting $2 million from the Province’s Building BC: Community Housing Fund as well as construction financing for the project.
“This is a fantastic project that shows exactly what can be accomplished when citizens, community groups and different levels of government come together in a selfless effort to better the lives of our very deserving seniors,” said Clearwater Mayor Merlin Blackwell, in a release.
The government says this project is part of more than 22,000 new homes that are either completed or underway throughout the province.
The land for the project was provided by the Evergreen Acres Senior Housing Society, while the Wells Gray Community Forest Society provided a grant of $1 million, and the District of Clearwater waived development cost charges and municipal connection costs.
Rents for the units will range from $420 to $728 per month, based on the income levels of the future tenants.
