Kamloops city council has picked a date for a vote on borrowing for a proposed Centre for the Arts.
Council has unanimously chosed April 4 for the referendum date, where voters will be asked “Are you in favour of the City of Kamloops borrowing up to $45 million to construct a Kamloops Centre for the Arts?”
The facility is expected to cost about $70 million altogether, with the Kamloops Centre for the Arts Society looking to fundraise $25 million dollars.
Philanthropists Ron and Rae Fawcett have committed to donate $3 million and also to donate land downtown which would be part of the performing arts centre property.
Council has also voted unanimously to spend $35,000 from the council contingency fund to do a communications plan ahead of the referendum, which will be rolled out over three phases between now and April 4. A fourth post-referendum phase would happen if borrowing the $45 million is approved.
The referendum itself is expected to cost about $120,000 to hold; council voted unanimously earlier this month to send the vote on borrowing to a referendum, saying it is the most plausible way to give the public all the information needed.
