The Kamloops Blazers scored 10 goals for the first time in over seven years, as they beat the Seattle Thunderbirds 10-1 at Sandman Centre on Wednesday night.
Connor Zary ended his night with a hat-trick, Zane Franklin and Montana Onyebuchi had a pair of goals each, while Max Martin assisted on four goals.
The game didn’t start out that way as Logan Stankoven got the only goal in the first period. Four minutes into the second, Connor Zary made it 2-0, but Seattle pulled one back though Keltie Jeri-Leon at 8:11.
It was after Zary scored his second goal shorthanded, did the flood gates open up. That goal, along with Ryan Hughes, Martin Lang, and Zane Franklin made it 6-1 after two periods. Those lats four goals came in a 6:50 span, effectively putting the game out of Seattle’s reach.
In the third, the Blazers didn’t let up – Zary finished his hat-trick, Franklin scored his second, while Montana Onyebuchi rounded things out with a pair of goals – his first came shorthanded when he shot the puck down the ice, but Seattle goalie Blake Lyda wasn’t able to control it, and it ended up in the net.
In addition to their goals, Lang and Hughes assisted on a pair of goals each, while Daylan Kuefler scored his first WHL point when he assisted on Lang’s goal.
With the win, the Blazers jump over idle Everett and into first place in the Western Conference. They’re also the first team in the WHL to win ten games on home ice this season.
The last time the Blazers scored ten in a game was a 10-4 win over Prince George in March 2012.
Dylan Garand picked up his 13th win of the season, making 19 saves. Lyda made 32 saves to take the loss.
The Blazers now head to Prince George for a pair of games against the Cougars this weekend, on Friday and Saturday night. You can hear them both on Radio NL starting at 7 p.m., with the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 p.m.
