A Kamloops woman is calling for changes on McGill Road to increase pedestrian safety after the death of a TRU employee earlier this month.
Heather MacCollum has started a change.org petition, saying the road is in need of lower speeds and flashing pedestrian crosswalks.
“McGill Road in Kamloops has high pedestrian traffic from Thompson Rivers University, Children’s Therapy Centre, Insight Support Service’s , Tournament Capital Centre, and various other restaurants and community businesses,” she said. “Speed, and visibility have been a serious concern for quite some time.”
Lucy Phua, 54, was struck and killed on Nov. 15 around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of McGill Road and University Way.
MacCollum is hoping to round up support and then present the petition to city council, asking for the changes.
“Protect our children, community members, seniors, and university students from preventable accidents,” she said. “These changes protect both the driver and pedestrians.”
