Parkcrest Elementary School will be getting a $10,000 grant from the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation.
The money will be put towards rebuilding the school library, which was destroyed in a fire back in September. The fire forced the relocation of staff and students to George Hilliard Elementary until a new school is built.
“Catalyzed by this grant, the school will be finalizing a library space at George Hilliard and officially opening it to their school community on December 3,” said Melissa Perri, with Indigo Books & Music. “The timeline for when Parkcrest will have their own space again is to be determined, but these books will form the basis of their new library when they make their way to their permanent home.”
She says the Foundation was contacted by community members in Kamloops after the fire.
“While this falls outside of the Foundation’s typical granting programs, the Foundation was moved by the story and will be supporting the school’s library rebuild through a transformative grant,” Perri noted. “This initiative will be a major step forward to ensuring that all children at Parkcrest Elementary School will have access to new and engaging books to support their education and foster a lifelong love of reading.”
Perri says Chapters and Coles employees in Kamloops will help Parkcrest Elementary curate their new collection of books.
