Update – Two people are in custody after a police incident between Falkland and Westwold this morning.
It’s after police say they were notified on a suspicious vehicle in the Falkland area just before 8 a.m. today.
“RCMP officers controlled access to the highway and strategically set up roadblocks in an attempt to safely stop the vehicle,” said Cst. Jocelyn Noseworthy of the Vernon-North Okanagan detachment.
“The driver failed to stop for police and allegedly fired shots from the vehicle as it fled from our officers, posing a serious risk to public safety.”
She says police were able to use a spike belt to bring the vehicle to a stop in Westwold, behind the St. Luke’s church, where a man and woman were taken into custody without further incident.
“Out of an abundance of caution RCMP ordered the lock down of Westwold Elementary School,” Noseworthy said. “That order has since been lifted.”
Noseworthy says police are not aware of any serious injuries as a result of this police incident. She adds the investigation is in its initial stages and the North Okanagan RCMP will be working together with the Kamloops and Merritt detachments.
As of 4 p.m., Highway 97 is fully open to traffic between Falkland and Westwold, after a closure lasting several hours while the scene was processed by RCMP.
Noseworthy says the North Okanagan RCMP were assisted by the Southeast District Emergency Response Team, the RCMP Police Dog Services, and a RCMP fixed wing aircraft from Kelowna.
Anyone with information or video of this incident is asked to contact the North Okanagan RCMP.
Original – Highway 97 is closed in Westwold because of a police incident, according to DriveBC.
There is no detour available in either direction, and at this time, it’s unclear when the highway will re-open.
We have heard reports of a large convoy of police vehicles responding to an incident.
A witness to the NL Newsroom says police are currently at the St. Luke’s church on Highway 97, believed to be pursuing someone who has gone on to that property.
NL news has reached out to the Southeast RCMP and the Vernon-North Okanagan R-C-M-P for more information.
More to come.
