The superintendent of the Kamloops RCMP says there is a disturbing legacy of officers being shot at in recent years.
Syd Leckie says on Dec. 3 a suspect shot at Kamloops Mounties in Falkland, and the next day two people, Darwyn Allen Curtis Sellers and Jennifer Patricia Singleton, were charged with three counts each of attempted murder.
A civilian also shot at officers in the G&M trailer park in October of 2017. Shortly after, Shane William Caron was charged with four counts of attempted murder, among other charges.
In September of last year, a man was killed in a standoff with police in Rose Hill after firing at officers. Nine months later, the police watchdog cleared officers involved of any potential wrongdoing.
“The legacy of these and other events, of violence directed towards police, are certainly very disturbing. As you’ve heard me say publicly and on other occasions, one of my major priorities is health and wellness of our members and staff. And no matter what section these men and women serve in, they face trauma on a day-to-day basis,” Lecky says.
The Kamloops RCMP responded to more than 42,000 calls for service in the first 11 months of 2019, in Kamloops and the surrounding area.
“Daily, officers in our detachment deal with an ever increasing number of calls for service that include mental health issues, illicit drugs and oftentimes, weapons.”
Earlier this year, Lecky told media that morale at the detachment is high despite a number of high-stress incidents.
