It’s a slow go to today for commuters travelling between Kamloops and the Lower Mainland.
The Coquihalla is currently closed southbound in Merritt at the junction with the Okanagan Connector because of multiple spun-out semi trucks, DriveBC says. There’s no estimated reopening time, and drivers are asked to use Highways 8 and 1 as an alternate route.
At the Zopkios chain up, near the Coquihalla Summit, 60 centimetres of snow fell between 6 p.m. last night and 6 a.m. this morning according to Environment Canada, with 70-80 cm of additional snow likely to fall before the end of Saturday.
Meanwhile, as of 10:55 a.m. the Trans-Canada Highway is back open between Hells Gate and Boston Bar after a rock slide earlier this morning.
The Hope-Princeton Highway is also still closed at the Allison Pass because of multiple crashes, and there’s no estimated time of reopening there either. As of 3:30 p.m. today, more than 90 centimetres of snow has fallen there since 6 p.m. last night, and the highway has been shut down since 10:45 p.m. on Thursday night.
The Trans-Canada Highway was closed just west of Revelstoke, meanwhile, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for avalanche control work. It’s expected to be closed between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. east of Revelstoke for avalanche control work as well.
Environment Canada is expecting snow to taper off on mountain passes in the southern interior by the end of Saturday.
