Environment Canada Meteorologist Doug Lundquist says the snow came like crazy at Coquihalla summit as it saw about 70 centimetres overnight and it’s not over yet.
He adds that there was 10-15 centimetres on the section between Merritt and Kamloops.
“Really variable amounts. I think Allison pass got 55 and we’re looking at problems at Rogers Pass to because of the snow they gotten in the Revelstoke area,” he told NL.
“So certainly a really snowy day in the high terrain. Down in the valley bottoms we kind of escaped it which kind of bodes unfortunate for the lower elevations for Christmas.”
Lundquist suggests avoiding travel until Sunday if you can as the system is likely to hang around for the next 24 to 36 hours. He says through the day Saturday it is going to be warm enough in all the valley locations that it is going to come down as rain.
“Any precipitation will be rain from Osoyoos at least up to Clinton, or at Cache Creek for sure. But at the higher terrain it is going to continue to snow,” Llundquist added.
“We’ll see another 30 to 50 at Rogers Pass, Hope to Merritt section of the Coquihalla, even some of the Merritt to Kamloops, Merritt to Kelowna sections of the Coquihalla could get upwards of 20 or 30.”
Lundquist says if you’re heading to the Kootenay’s, the system may last into Sunday.
