Snow and power outages were the tale of the tape for Sun Peaks over the New Year holidays.
Marketing Director Aidan Kelly says it may have been the largest single snow storm event ever for Sun Peaks but it is still crunching the numbers to find out for sure. “Actually had so much snow in such a short period of time that it actually overwhelmed our snow tracking systems. So, no one actually knows what the exact number is of snow that fell. We know for sure that it was slightly north of 60 cm in probably about a 36-hour period.”
He adds that it also had to deal large power outages that resulted in some changes to its new year’s celebrations. “It was a resort wide outage and it was a long one. The power went out early afternoon on New Year’s Eve and it was out all through the afternoon, all through the night and then starting coming back on early in the morning on New Year’s Day. So that was a difficult one because New Year’s Day is typically our busiest day of the year.”
Kelly says there was disruption to a number of amenities like restaurants, but they scrambled and were able to make things work. He says it was a bit tricky though, given that it happened on one of the busiest days of the year. “When all the restaurants are full, all the hotels are full, there’s people taking in all the events and things like that, so we had to make a bunch of adjustments. The majority of the restaurants weren’t open, so for people getting food and meals it was a bit trickier than normal. But, we do have some places that run on backup generators. So, those guys were very, very busy.”
Kelly says they made adjustments accordingly and they were still able to have a fireworks display.
