With the Prime Minister dogged by numerous scandals, the Conservatives should have been a shoe in to take last October’s federal election but came up short and after some reflection, it’s time to pick a new boss.
While on the NL Morning News, Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo Member of Parliament Cathy McLeod was asked if not gaining ground in Central Canada was a factor. “Huge number of seats so, absolutely. Ontario was where we lost the election this round.”
“We absolutely need to have a platform that appeals across the country. So, it can’t just be a western based party, it needs to be a Canadian based party.”
McLeod said she wants to take a long look at the candidates before she decides who she’ll throw her support behind. “What I decided this time is I was going to see all the names that were out there and I want to talk to each one individually about a few issues before I decide where my support is going to go.”
The MP said inclusively is key in the party moving forward. “I did hear on the doorsteps this time is that we also need to have a plan that people believe in in terms that we care about the environment and we’re going to move forward and obviously the issues in terms of the social conservative.”
“We’re a big tent party but we need to assure people that everyone is welcome within this big tent.”
It’s expected everyone taking a shot at the leadership will be throwing their hat in the ring within the next week or two.
The Tories will pick their new leader on June 27th.
