The community of Falkland is trying to be the next Kraft Hockeyville community.
The goal is to raise money to put a roof over their outdoor rink, which would help preserve the ice over the winter months.
“Where our rink is located, the sun hits it quite a bit as well as the snow,” said organizer Kim Churchill, who was on the NL Morning News. “Now somebody is going to have to go and shovel all the snow off again.”
“Over the holidays we needed to get a local farmer to come in with his tractor because it was so much and so heavy. So both of those things are big problems for us, keeping our ice clean and solid for the locals to come and skate.”
The winner of Hockeyville gets $250,000 for a community project, and also gets to host an NHL exhibition game, which is where Churchill says Kamloops would be involved.
“We would look into playing [the NHL game] where the Blazers play,” she added. “All of Kamloops and the surrounding area could enjoy a free NHL exhibition game at the start of the season, that would be great.”
Even if the community doesn’t win, Churchill says to be named a finalist would be a great achievement, as it would guarantee $25,000 to Falkland.
Nominations are open until Feb. 9.
