The city of Kamloops is doing what it can to make information available to those who have questions about a proposed Performing Arts Centre and the upcoming referendum.
Community Services Director Byron McCorkell says it is always a challenge to make sure correct information is being shared when talking about any democratic process. “Whether it’s the performing arts centre or a road project. At the end of the day from the community perspective a lot of things are happening, there’s a lot of conversations going on, where do you go to get the correct information and so we have that role of making sure that there is unfettered, unbiased, here’s the facts and move from there.”
The web page has about 70 questions that have been answered and there is an opportunity to submit more if you can’t find the answer you’re looking for. “The site is live and basically it’s monitored by our staff. So when a question comes in, it is put through to whoever is best to answer it and then a response goes out.”
The referendum on whether to borrow up to 45 million is set for April 4th and McCorkell says people should know the facts before casting a ballot.”And so people need to know why we’re suggesting that, how that’s supported, what the impacts would be to them at their doorstep if they’re a taxpayer, and ultimately what this money would provide for our community as a whole.”
