The City of Kamloops will be working to remove snow that’s been accumulating by the side of the roads this winter.
Streets Manager Glen Farrow says they haul away snow after it’s reaches the 60 cm mark, which is has after snowfall this week.
“Our focus is to remove snow in the business districts on the North Shore as well as the downtown core,” he said. “Starting tonight, we will be on Lansdowne, Victoria and Seymour Streets, between First and Sixth Avenues, ensuring better access to those businesses in that corridor.”
Weather permitting, Farrow says snow removal will take place in the Tranquille corridor next week.
“Some of the other areas that are challenging where we’ll begin clearing snow are where the lanes are actually becoming unsafe and not proper widths in particular on bus routes,” Farrow said.
“So some other areas where we often begin removing snow are routes such as Lodgepole and Abbeyglen.”
And he’s asking residents to avoid parking their vehicles on the streets while work in ongoing.
“We are seeing local roads narrowing up but our focus is not on local roads and removing snow at all. Our focus is on those main arterial roads and moving into bus routes,” said Farrow.
“So we know those tricky areas where it often builds up quickly, so that’s what we are going to be attacking over the coming weeks.”
He told NL it costs about $10,000 per night to clear windrows from city streets, adding the snow that is cleared up is taken to one of many snow dumps in the city, the biggest being at the public works yard, just off McGill Road.
