A recent court ruling has forced the federal government’s hand to make changes in rules for assisted dying and is asking for your input but according to our Member of Parliament, they aren’t giving us enough time.
While speaking on NL Newsday, Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod raised concerns that a topic as significant as assisted death should be looked at for a longer period. “What I’m perhaps most concerned about is, this is a really important conversation.”
“It’s something I think people want to be very thoughtful about and they’ve given a two week time deadline for Canadians to have their input. So, certainly that is my first concern with what the government is proposing to do.”
“Two weeks for people to have their say, so what I am encouraging is for those who have significant thoughts about this issue to go online, to make their submission or alternatively to send in something to my email and I’ll make sure it gets forwarded on the Minister of Justice.”
“I know in the last parliament, we had actually a couple of months to have round tables. I had a survey people in the riding and that helped form my decision about how to vote and so this this really way too fast and certainly not a preferred process by any means.”
Some things up for consideration is, if people with mental health issues are eligible and increasing the current 10 day period of reflection after requesting assisted death.
Canadians have until January 27 to fill out the online survey.
