If you have plans to travel on the Coquihalla today and tomorrow, you might want to consider delaying your trip.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Doug Lundquist says as much as 35 cm of snow is expected on the Hope to Merritt section by the end of tomorrow.
“There’s a frontal system draped across the Southern Interior that’s affecting the highways and the valleys and we have warnings out in some places,” he told NL News.
“It’s pretty nasty for travel on the highway system and even in the valley, I think it might try to turn over to rain on Friday, but the next three days look like snow or wet snow and there’s more accumulations coming in the valley.”
Lundquist says its due to a system that’s currently bringing snow to parts of the Southern Interior, which could last until the weekend.
“But I don’t think we’re completely out of the wood with precipitation. I think that’s a bit of an optimistic forecast, but you know, it is February so if we are between systems there will be sunny breaks, and it doesn’t take much to pop us above zero,” Lundquist added.
“For later next week, it’s back into the Arctic Air, but it probably won’t be as cold as what we saw in January.”
The Kamloops to Merritt section of the Coquihalla by the way could see about 10 to 15 cms of snow by tomorrow evening, while Highway 1 between Eagle and Rogers Pass could see about 20 cm of snow by tomorrow.
“When I read a forecast like that I’m thinking we better check DriveBC if we go at all. It’s kind of a difficult weather pattern. I tend to try and hunker down in these situations and stay safe,” said Lundquist.
“It’s kind of a miserable couple of days if you don’t like snow. If you do, it’s great for the mountains and for all your friends that love skiing.”
