The sixth annual RIH Foundation Radiothon happens today, looking to raise money for the RIH Foundation in Kamloops.
CEO Heidi Coleman says it will be an exciting day when the Radiothon happens between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. live on Radio NL, broadcast live from Aberdeen Mall.
And she says the Conconi Foundation have pledged to match donations up to $100,000 while Canadian Pacific Rail will match donations made between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. today.
“And we’re going to share stories from the prospective of the hospital, the patients, the families, the doctors, some really good feel good stories about how they have benefitted or stories about how Royal Inland Hospital takes care of our community,” Coleman said.
The goal this year is to make it a million dollars raised over the six years of the Radiothon, with Coleman saying all the money raised will benefit the hospital by buying equipment.
“That’s what the doctors and the nurses and the health professionals need. You know sometimes they go to a conference and they see this new piece of equipment. They’re not taking it home, they need it for us,” she noted.
“They need it to help the patients. We want to make sure they have it, so that we can recruit and retain the doctors in our community.”
As for this year’s wish-list?
“For the Pediatrics Department, we need bassinets. We need twelve of them at a cost of $3,000 each and then fetal monitors for babies. That’s a $40,000 piece of equipment,” Coleman noted.
“In the Cancer Care Centre, we need sinuscopes which are used to identify possible tumors in the sinuses or nasal passages. They’re about $8,000 each, we’re hoping for a pair. And now ultrasounds to look for tumors that do not show up on x-rays. This one that we need is about $55,000.”
