A veteran member of the TRU Wolfpack Men’s Basketball team is up for a national award.
Fifth-year player Mike Rouault – who was one of the team captains over the past two seasons – has been chosen as the Canada West representative for the Ken Shields Award. It is given to a player who excels on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.
The winner will be announced next month at the U SPORTS men’s basketball nationals.
“It is a huge accomplishment to be named the Canada West rep for this award,” said Head Coach Scott Clark. “It is a culmination of years of work by Mike. He will be a five time Academic All Canadian.”
“From an athletic standpoint, he worked away to be a one of the leaders in the league in a whole bunch of basketball categories. Not to mention the leadership that he brings to our club, and the community.”
Rouault is poised to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree this spring, and is a two time winner of the Cliff Neufeld student/athlete leadership award. He also won the Doctor Roger H. Barnsley Scholar/Athlete award last year.
He is also one of the leaders of the WolfPack’s PACE program which is designed to help student athletes with their studies.
On the court, he was sixth in Canada West in total rebounds and defensive rebounds, seventh in rebounds per game, and tenth in offensive rebounds.
In the community, Rouault has coached basketball with the Special Olympics, coordinating community events like the Terry Fox Run, and the Raise-a-Reader fundraiser. He’s also been a part of the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation’s Radiothon.
His future plans are to enter Law School.
