A man and a woman are in police custody after a collision with a semi-truck near Chase on Sunday morning following a series of alleged dangerous driving infractions.
Police say the incident happened just after 3 a.m., when an officer called for backup after failing to stop a suspected impaired driver on the Trans Canada highway, near Chase
“A second Chase RCMP officer located the vehicle near Shuswap Avenue and the Trans Canada Highway where he observed the driver allegedly swerving all over the roadway, over the shoulder and into the oncoming lane, at speeds in excess of 140 km/hr,” said Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet, in a release.
“Recognizing the possible risk to other motorists, the officer activated his emergency equipment in an attempt to stop the vehicle and alert any on-coming traffic.”
Shoihet says the vehicle in question disappeared around a 90-degree bend, and eventually collided head-on with a semi-truck – the semi driver was not injured.
“Upon police arrival the driver and passenger of the suspect vehicle were already out and attempting to flee on foot,” noted Shoihet. “A 30-year-old woman from Abbotsford, was arrested at the scene and a 33-year-old man from Prince George was arrested nearby with assistance from a police service dog.”
She says the woman will likely be released from custody with a future court date, while the man is expected to appear in court today. No charges have been laid.
