An average February weather wise in Kamloops according to data from Environment Canada
Meteorologist Doug Lundquist says the average temperature in Kamloops last month was right around the 0 C mark.
“We came out to -0.2 C. The average for February is usually 0.1 C, so we were about a third of a degree below average, which is insignificant,” he told NL News. “Precipitation wise, I would say it’s insignificant too. That’s because we got about 21 mm of precipitation. We usually only get 12 mm.”
Most of the precipitation last month fell during a snowstorm on February 5.
“February is one of the driest months of the year, so if we happen to get rain or snow at all in February, it can skewer the numbers,” noted Lundquist. “So I would say February came out looking pretty typical, except for maybe that little bit of extra snow that we had at some points throughout the month.”
He says it’s a big difference compared to February 2019 which saw average temperatures around -8 C and about 14 mm of precipitation.
“We did have one record high last month, February 1 was 13.2 degrees,” said Lundquist. “The old record was 12.4 in 2005. So we did have that one record high there for Kamloops.”
As for the three winter months of December to February, Lundquist tells NL News the average temperature from December through February was about one degree above average.
“So winter came out as -0.9 C and it’s usually -1.8 C. So we came out almost one degree above average,” he said. “As far as precipitation wise, we had 59 mm rain and snow together. Usually we get 60 mm, we couldn’t be closer to average for that.”
Lundquist says while he’s not expecting snow in March, it can still fall in the valley, but he says it likely won’t last very long.
As for for higher terrain like the Coquihalla, Lundquist says winter is still in full force there until the end April at least, and he’s urging drivers to be prepared.
