Licensing and insuring cyclists is something that comes up every few years and it’s once again being debated in the province.
It seems that ever since Henry Ford invented the assembly line, drivers and cyclists have been at odds with each other.
Sean Daley is the manager of Cycle Logic in Kamloops and while on NL Newsday, he said he doesn’t see licensing as a great idea to improve cyclist and motorist relations. “Everyday we’re out on the roads we see motorists and cyclists not obeying driving laws and rules.:
“Licensing doesn’t necessarily change someone’s behaviour. Education and courses would maybe be a positive thing for both drivers and cyclists, I could agree with.”
He said a lot of incidents between the two are a matter of someone not paying attention. “It’s a lack of communication as well, whether it’s the cyclist that doesn’t signal or the motorist that doesn’t signal or whether some runs though a stop sign of some other traffic control.”
“I mean it goes both ways, I wouldn’t blame the cyclist, I wouldn’t blame the motorist in every situation, you see it everyday on the roads whether you’re driving or riding.”
In the end, Daley says, it’s probably a bad idea especially with kids, saying “licensing is just erecting barriers to a great form of transportation.”
