The Western Hockey League is implementing safety protocols in light of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.
Starting immediately, players on all 22 teams are being urged to avoid shaking hands of teammates, opponents, and officials to stop the spread of the virus. As well, players are urged to not share water bottles and towels either on the benches or in the penalty boxes.
Players and officials are also urged to avoid direct contact with fans – that includes high-fives, handshakes, and autographs.
“The safety of our players, officials, staff, fans, and the general public, remains of the utmost importance,” the league said in a statement. “The WHL is taking all necessary precautions, as advised by Canadian and U.S. health authorities, to mitigate potential spread of COVID-19.”
In the event that players or team personnel begin developing COVID-19 symptoms, they’re asked to reach out to medical staff immediately.
“The WHL is advising players and Club personnel to maintain good hygiene practices, including regular and thorough washing of hands with soap and water, or cleansing with alcohol-based hand sanitizers,” noted the statement from the league.
No WHL games have been cancelled, nor have any teams been ordered to play in closed arenas at this time. The league says all media opportunities will go on as scheduled in designated media areas as unlike in the NHL, dressing rooms as restricted areas.
