Like the city of Kamloops, the city of Merritt is temporarily closing all recreation facilities until further notice because of COVID-19.
That includes the Merritt Civic Centre, the Nicola Valley Aquatic Centre, the arena, the seniors’ centre, the museum, and the visitor’s centre. The decision was made at a special council meeting on Monday night.
However, city parks and outdoor recreation facilities are open at this time.
At this time, Merritt City Council meetings will continue as usual, but people are urged to listen in online and not head to city hall in person.
Residents are being asked to not worry about renewing dog and business licences at this time. The city is looking at the potential of online payment options.
As well, in light of regulations by the provincial government to limit crowds to less that 50 people, a series of events are postponed including the native hockey tournament, church services, and the Merritt thrift shop. You’ll find a full list of cancelled or postponed events online.
City staff say city facilities are also being cleaned more frequently, and people are asked to do the same at home.
People are also being asked to stay home if they are feeling sick of have recently travelled outside of Canada, and to practice social distancing.
