Update:
Kamloops Fire Rescue is reminding people of the risk of fires even at this time of the year, after crews put out a two-hectare grassfire this afternoon.
The fire happened on Tk’emlúps land near 1260 Salish Road at about 1:30 p.m., and it was under control within an hour.
“As you know, the COVID-19 is taking a lot of our time but life goes on, other calls they never stop. And so whether it’s wildfires or medical calls or car accidents, the city doesn’t stop even though we’ve got this pandemic going on,” assistant fire chief Robb Schoular says.
Schoular couldn’t comment on a cause of the grass fire at this point.
But says people need to be mindful that fires from smoking materials can happen at any time of the year.
“We are certainly not immune to careless smoking, use of matches, cigarettes, discarding of smoking materials. As evidence today, that can happen at any time of the year. The City of Kamloops takes this very seriously and we urge residents and visitors alike to be mindful.
“I don’t know what the cause is, I’m just saying that we can certainly do our part to mitigate any kind of threat of wildfires, and that’s one area that we can be proactive in.”
Schoular says it appears the fire was contained to just grass and that there was no damage to structures or possessions.
