B.C.’s Health Minister is once again reminding people that everyone has to pitch in over the coming days to fight the spread of the novel coronavirus across the country.
Adrian Dix says doctors and nurses are risking their lives on the front lines, and he’s frustrated as some younger people are not taking things seriously.
“It’s our expectation that we all do so. It’s what we owe to one another,” Dix said Friday. “Today we are going to find more ways to be all in in the fight, and tomorrow we are going to find more. And we need everyone to join us. We’ve said it before, but we need to say it again, and again, and again.”
He says he knows some of the asks of the Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, like the closing of restaurants and bars, are extreme.
“We need to give our healthcare workers who are preparing to deal with the health consequences of this virus, the flattened curve they need to provide the continued service that will help everyone in the province,” Dix said. “Right now, and every moment from here on, going all in on COVID-19 will save lives.”
He says he wants people to continue to wash your hands frequently, stay home if you are sick, and not gather in large crowds.
“Starting now, there’s no longer any room for almost, or pretty good, or nearly enough,” said Dix. “Starting now, our individual fight, our collective fight must be 100 per cent, all of the time. I know it’s a lot to ask of a lot of people.”
As of Saturday, B.C. had 424 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 27 people in hospital, 12 in intensive care, with ten fatalities.
Vancouver Coastal Health has 230 cases, Fraser Health has 126 cases, Vancouver Island Health has 37 cases, Interior Health has 27 cases, and Northern Health had four cases.
