
Tonight would have been opening night in the WHL playoffs, and the Kamloops Blazers would have been preparing to host the Kelowna Rockets in Game One at Sandman Centre.
Instead, the team announced its season award winners today as the WHL season has been cancelled because of COVID-19 concerns.
Zane Franklin was a big winner this season. The Blazers captain was named the Dean Evason Award for Inspirational Leadership and Ability winner, while also winning the Radio NL Three-Star Award, the Plus/Minus Award, and the Vern Seaman Top Scorer Award. He also shared the CH Day Memorial Trophy MVP along with goaltender Dylan Garand.
Kamloops native Logan Stankoven won both the Andy & Molly Clovechok Award as Rookie of the Year award and the Doris Rubel Award as Most Dedicated Player award.
The Eldon Dever Tophy as Best Defenseman went to overage defenceman Max Martin, while Orrin Centazzo snagged the MJB Law Most Improved Player award.
The Rick Anderson Memorial Trophy as the team’s unsung hero was shared by forwards Brodi Stuart and Ryan Hughes, while Montana Onyebuchi claimed the Blazers Booster Club Award for Community Involvement and sharing the Bob Winters Memorial Trophy as Grinder of the Year with Brodi Stuart.
Rookie Caedan Bankier was the winner of the Diamond in the Rough Award, Dylan Garand won the George Stewart Sr. Award for Excellence in Hockey and Education, while Connor Zary was the winner of the Top Prospects Award.
