The B.C. Government is reporting five new deaths and 43 new COVID-19 cases across the province since yesterday, for a total of 1,013 cases.
There are a total of 107 cases in the Interior Health Authority, an increase of 13 cases from yesterday. As well, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced five new deaths – four in the Vancouver Coastal Health area and one in Fraser Health – for a total of 24.
Meanwhile, the province and Interior Health are investigating a COVID-19 outbreak involving temporary foreign workers at Bylands Nurseries in West Kelowna. A total of 75 workers – 63 migrant workers and 12 local workers – are affected. They are all in quarantine in on-site housing and will remain there until further notice.
“At this time, we have 14 positive COVID-19 test results,” said IH spokesperson Karl Hardt. “Some additional results are pending.”
This outbreak is likely linked to a group of workers who arrived in Kelowna from outside of Canada on March 12. Henry says the workers were isolated and weren’t going out in to the community.
Hardt adds the closure order from Interior Health in this case applies to Bylands Nurseries only, but adds the Bylands Garden Centre, which is a separate business, has also closed voluntarily.
Interior Health is also warning the public about a case of COVID-19 at the Subway in Cache Creek.
Speaking Thursday, Dr. Henry also said there are 128 people currently in hospital, 61 in ICU, adding that 507 people have fully recovered from the virus.
