The Executive Director of the Kamloops Food Bank says now more than ever, they’re asking for donations to help people weather the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bernadette Siracky says food donation and supply levels are unpredictable, but the demand is expected to increase in the coming weeks.
“Everyday is a new adventure since this crisis has started. There have been days where we’ve had no food coming through the door, there have been days we’ve been overwhelmed,” she said.
“And then of course, Kamloops is just showing up as it always does with unique surprises for us. So as businesses are shutting down like restaurants, they’re bringing us all of their perishable products.”
Siracky says the upcoming Rotary Food Drive on April 18 will be an especially important one for the Kamloops Food Bank.
“Put out that yellow bag. Rotarians are going to come by and we have a unique procedure to maintain social distancing,” she added. “There’s going to be no large gathering here, but we’re hoping there’s going to be a large gathering of non-perishable product.”
“We’ve connected in with both public health and the city, they’ve given us the okay, at least at this point.”
People are asked for put their yellow donation bags out as far down your driveway as possible so that Rotarians don’t have to come up to your door.
“This is definitely uncharted territory for food banks as it is for the rest of the world,” Siracky said. “We remain open because honestly without us, our communities most vulnerable would certainly struggle with a consistent source of food.”
