The Bank of Canada is looking to redesign Canada’s five dollar bill, and on the 40th anniversary of the beginning of his Marathon of Hope, there are more calls to have Terry Fox on the new bank note.
There have been a few names kicked around for the honour, from the father of medicare, Tommy Douglas to Metis leader Louis Reil but it’s Fox’s name that is coming up the most.
Fred Fox, Terry’s older brother was on the NL Morning News and said his family has been touched by the outpouring of support.
“It’s amazing the response Canadians had to the Bank of Canada’s announcement that they were going to be changing up the five dollar bill and you know Terry would say, the run wasn’t about him,” he said.
Fred Fox added his kid brother was a humble guy that shied away from fame.
“He wasn’t about tributes and dedications and being called a hero, he was about raising money for cancer research, so as a family that’s where we I kind of leave it as well and if it’s something that happens because Canadians wanted to see Terry recognized this way, we’ll be happy to see it,” he added.
Canada’s seventh Prime Minister Sir Wilfred Laurier, has been on the five dollar bill since 1972. The Bank of Canada is expected to make a decision on the new note later this year.
