B.C.’s Premier hasn’t been around at as many news conferences like some other Premiers in Canada, which has led to some criticism that he’s not in the spotlight enough during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While on the NL Morning News, John Horgan was asked if that was good idea, especially with an election on the horizon next year.
“I’m not running for election right now, I’m trying to run the province and I think British Columbians would prefer that the politics take a back seat,” he said. “That’s what I’m hearing almost overwhelmingly how gratified people are – Liberals, New Democrats, Greens – that we’re all in this together.”
Horgan says there are very capable people guiding the province through COVID-19, including Health Minister Adrian Dix and Provincial Health Officer, Dr Bonnie Henry.
“Adrian Dix is doing a masterful job aided by Dr. Bonnie Henry who is become a cult figure across the country because of her calm, focused demeanour,” Horgan said. “Why would I interfere with that? British Columbians are comfortable with the information they are getting about the pandemic.”
He went on to say he is “not about jumping in front of cameras” everyday.
“I’m deferring to the people I’ve given jobs to do those jobs, and until somebody isn’t up to the test, I’m going to continue to take that leadership style,” Horgan added.
