Kamloops City Council will be trying to revamp the municipal budget during this Tuesday’s meeting.
Speaking on The Jeff Andreas Show, Mayor Ken Christian says it will be discussing a couple of things.
“One will be a re-forecasting of our 2020-2021 budget for the city of Kamloops. What we had worked almost 10 months on has had to be re-worked in about two weeks with a lot of unknown variables,” he said.
Christian says it will also be discussing capital work. “So a lot of those projects, whether we can defer them, whether or not we want to take advantage of this opportunity to get them done, that kind of thing.”
Christian says next week, on April 28th, council will wrestle with issues related to tax penalty dates and utility deferrals. Kamloops Voter Society Member Randy Sunderman says it is hoping to see supports for taxpayers.
“Taxpayers are also under a lot of constraints right now. Doesn’t matter of you’re on the business side or the residential side of the tax system in the city, we’re facing pretty reduced incomes among a lot of people,” he added.
“Obviously our businesses are closed and a lot of people have been laid off, so the ability of the taxpayer to pay municipal taxpayers is constrained this year.”
The message is taxpayers can’t pay to the same level they have before so anything that council can can do to help would be appreciated.
“We’re looking at probably more than one year of impact here so really planning not just here, but next year and make that move to support the taxpayer.”
