The city of Kamloops says paving and milling work on Victoria Street West from the Overlanders Bridge to the Mission Flat and Summit Drive intersection will begin next Monday, May 4.
Capital projects manager Darren Crundwell says work will happen in three phases, with crews set to remove asphalt on Tuesday, and pave on Friday, if the weather permits it.
“As far as the work goes, we just get in there with a milling machine and mill about 50 mm out and then repave it,” Crundwell told NL News. “The public will see that, and they will see some detours, well signed, and well communicated and communication as well on what’s going on throughout the construction.”
The work, he says, is in addition to paving work that was part of the Victoria Street West project, which was completed last year.
“Probably a week of paving I think is what we are anticipating. Just some resurfacing work, there’s no reconstruction,” said Crundwell.
“This is just something that we have added on through our arterial road program. We’re going to be a number of pure resurfacing projects, so all we are getting in there and doing is some milling and paving, just in areas that need it – Victoria Street West, Barnhartvale Road, Tranquille Road – those are the major arterial roads.”
Once the work on Victoria Street West is complete, there will be line painting and clean-up work which is set to begin in the week of May 11.
“With the COVID-19 pandemic, the City, Extreme Excavating Ltd. and the project’s subcontractors are taking every precaution to help ensure the safety of crews and the general public within the Victoria Street West construction site, including reducing crew numbers and following the guidelines for social distancing,” noted Crundwell.
He notes the Victoria Street West project is still on track to be completed this summer. As it stands, all third-party utility service changeovers have been completed, with both sidewalk and landscaping work underway.
And Crundwell is reminding drivers that there is a 30 km/hr reduced speed limit still is in place throughout the entire Victoria Street West construction zone.
