Residents of Sun Peaks will not be seeing an increase in property taxes this year.
Speaking on The Jeff Andreas Show, Mayor Al Raine says COVID-19 has had a dramatic effect on the community.
“Impact has been devastating on the tourism and the hospitality industries. Ninety per cent of the businesses in Sun Peaks closed their doors. So, there’s no revenue coming in, there’s still rent, there’s still cost. Seventy-five to 80 per cent of the employees in Sun Peaks lost their job.”
Raine says there is all kinds of stress on everyone and not increasing taxes this year is a needed move to make sure the people of his community can get through this tough time.
“It’s not a large amount but it’s certainly a symbol of our recognition that there are a lot of people that are certainly under financial pressure these days and it’s not the time for a municipality to be raising taxes.”
