B.C. is reporting its lowest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases in nearly two months.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has announced eight new cases, bringing the provincial total to 2,232.
She did, however, announce four new deaths, meaning 121 people have now died because of COVID-19 in this province.
But Henry says the province has made progress in what was once considered the epicenter of the crisis here in B-C.
“Seventeen outbreaks that have been declared over in long term care and assisted living including our very first one, the Lynn Valley Care Centre outbreak is now officially over,” she says, referencing the North Vancouver care home where the first COVID-19 death in Canada was recorded, and where at least 20 residents have died. “All of the people who were affected in that facility have recovered now, which is really great news.”
With the number of new cases continuing to decrease, Henry asks people not to start planning play dates and expanding social circles too soon.
“We have put the brakes on for sure, but we have not yet stopped the train. And we’ve seen opening up too soon can have consequences.”
Henry says 78 people are in hospital with COVID-19 across B.C. Meanwhile, 1,472 patients have recovered from COVID-19, which is 66 per cent of reported cases.
