While there’s no risk of flooding in the immediate forecast for the North and South Thompson rivers, the city of Kamloops is preparing for the potential of high floodwaters with flood mitigation work set to begin today.
Extreme Excavating will be installing Hesco flood barriers throughout Riverside Park, with work set to be completed by next Tuesday, May 19.
There will be areas of the park will be closed to the public as crews will move from west to east, with work beginning near the Uji Gardens. The Riverside Park West parking lot will be closed to the public, while the Northern Section of the River’s Trail will also be closed – both these areas are expected to reopen by May 14.
Starting tomorrow, pier railings at the Riverside Park pier will be removed to prevent potential damage from floating debris. The pier will also be closed until water levels recede.
There will also be work done to install Hesco baskets from the pier to Sandman Centre between May 14 and 19. The River’s Trail east of Sandman Centre towards Pioneer Park and the parking area behind Sandman Centre will remain open to the public as long as the river level does not rise.
“Once the barriers are fully deployed, signage will be installed warning the public to stay well back of the barriers to in order to protect their safety.” said Utility Services Manager, Greg Wightman.
“When the installation is complete, the River’s Trail from Uji Gardens to Sandman Centre, the beach area, and the pier will be closed to the public. The flood protection measures are expected to be in place until the end of June, when they will be removed, and these areas of the park will reopen.”
For now, the city says boat launches will remain open unless rising waters forces them to be closed. However, boaters are being asked to be careful while or near the water.
Residents are also being told be careful around all waterways, culverts, and riverbanks.
