A second federal jail in the Lower Mainland has been hit with an outbreak of COVID-19.
Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says one case has been identified at the Matsqui Institution in Abbotsford.
She says the health officials are working diligently to prevent any further cases in the facility.
“This person was identified early and has very few risky contacts, so that’s a very good thing for us.”
This comes after 120 people contracted COVID-19 at the Mission medium-security Institution, where one person died as a result. There is still one active case linked to that jail.
Henry announced the outbreak while announcing 12 new COVID-19 cases in B.C., as well as three additional deaths in the Lower Mainland. The new cases include two in the Interior Health region.
There have now been 152 deaths and 2,488 reported cases of the virus in this province. More than 81 per cent of those reported cases are considered recovered, and there are 307 active cases; province-wide, 43 people are in hospital with COVID-19 and eight people are in intensive care.
