UPDATE – A special weather statement calling for up to 10 cm of snow on some Kamloops area mountain passes has been ended.
ORIGINAL – A special weather statement is in effect for the mountain passes in the Southern Interior today.
Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says we could see 5 to 10 cm of snow fall on the Okanagan Connector, and about 2 to 4 cm on the Coquihalla between Hope and Merritt.
“It’s not over till its over when it comes to snow in the mountains there,” he said. “Once we get to this far into May, it tends to melt faster, but certainly watch out for it, look at the web cams, and make sure everything is okay before you head out, especially if you have converted to summer type tires.”
Lundquist says the snow should turn to rain, with the possibility of flurries later today as things warm up.
Environment Canada about 5 to 10 cm is also expected between the Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass on Highway 3, and about 2 to 4 cm over Allison Pass on Highway 1 as well.
“As things warm up, it will give way to rain in many locations and that’s showing up as snow at the highest terrain,” Lundquist added.
“I see the webcams at the Coquihalla Summit and on the Connector, its definitely collecting for sure in the grass and on the side of the road in the ditches, but it looks like its sticking in some places too on the highways.”
Wet snow right now near the #Coquihalla Summit and sticking snow east of #Merritt. A special weather statement is in place for both highways, with 2-4cm on #BCHwy5 expected today and 5-10cm on #BCHwy97C ❄️❄️ @RadioNLNews #Kamloops pic.twitter.com/ypkMEK7rC3
