Starting Tuesday, Kamloops City council will be resuming public hearings.
Public meetings were put on hold in mid-March.
Mayor Ken Christian says “on [June] 2nd, we’re going to have our first electronic public hearing and see how that goes and we want to continue to provide local government service in Kamloops and we’re just modifying them just like everyone else has to.”
Councillor Mike O’Reilly says these public sessions are important for a few reasons. “One being that if people want to be investing in our community right now we need to make sure that, that can happen. We can’t be the level of government that’s stopping investment in the community and to that end it has taken a lot of time to find a system and a process that will work properly.”
O’Reilly says it will look a lot different than normal as it will be done virtually, and they had a chance last week to test the system and try to work out the kinks. “You know, you imagine the public here and people come and line up behind the microphone to speak, well now we’re going to have people que and line up to get in a speaking corner electronically via Zoom.”
The first public hearing is scheduled for 7:00 tomorrow night.
