B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office (IIO BC) will be investigating an incident in Williams Lake last night after a man was injured when he lost control of his motorcycle while being chased by police.
Police say just before 7 p.m., they were called to Ridgewood Place in Williams Lake to help find a man who was threatening to harm himself after allegedly having a mental health crisis.
“The caller reported the man had left a residence on a trail/dirt bike,” said a statement from police. “An officer located the man near the residence but was unable to take him into custody prior the man fleeing on the motorbike.”
Police say a second officer tried to stop the man on Highway 20 and pursued him for several blocks.
“An interaction occurred between the police vehicle and the motorbike, causing the man to lose control of the motorbike near Desous Road,” added the RCMP statement. “He was arrested by police and transported to a local area hospital by BC Emergency Health Services where it was determined the man had suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries.”
The IIO BC is now investigating to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the man’s injuries.
