It’s Seniors Week in BC marking a time to celebrate those over the age of 65 in our province and also talk about ways to do better such as improvements in long term care.
Speaking on The Jeff Andreas Show, BC Senior Advocate Isobel MacKenzie says the public has been somewhat in the dark when it come to issues that were brought out in the reports last week from the Canadian Armed Forces into care homes in Ontario and Quebec.
“Certainly the public has been awakened to issues that were really just talked about among academics and health care people and advocates such as myself and to the general public there may not have been awareness because the general public is not impacted directly by nursing homes or long term care homes.”
“With a commitment to make life on a day-to-day basis in care homes in BC and across Canada better. And I don’t think the public will allow that commitment to fade away in a post-COVID world.”
“And I think what has happened is as they’ve been awakened to their realities they’ve said ‘sorry this isn’t good enough’ and we have to do better. If the public demands that, the public will get that.”
