UPDATED 5 p.m.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been called to the scene where a body was found in the Fraser Canyon this morning, which is now being called suspicious.
Police were called to an area near the Trans-Canada Highway in Yale, near Toll Road, at 4:15 a.m. today, where a person was said to be lying on the side of the highway.
That person died at the scene as a result of their injuries. Further details of the person’s death and their identity have not yet been provided.
IHIT and Hope RCMP are now in the early stage of investigating, and the Trans-Canada Highway remains closed through Yale while that happens.
As of 5:15 p.m., DriveBC says there’s still no estimated time for when the highway could reopen. It’s been closed through Yale for more than 12 hours.
Drivers are being asked to use the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt and Highway 8 from Merritt to Spences Bridge as detour routes if needed.
Anyone with information about the suspicious death is being asked to call IHIT or Hope RCMP, or CrimeStoppers if they’d like to stay anonymous.
