At the eleventh hour, quite literally, the organizers of a peaceful demonstration planned for Riverside Park today showing solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement have cancelled the event.
Organizers used an Instagram account called ‘kamloops.blm.movement’, which has now changed its name to ‘kamloops.bipoc.support’ noting they are no longer organizing the event, which was meant to be a peaceful show of solidarity for George Floyd and other unarmed people of colour who have been murdered.
“Our intentions did not align with the effects of our actions,” organizers say, in an Instagram post.
“The original idea was to create a space for people to express their feelings of injustice… The goal of this protest was to open conversation and change for local and international individuals.”
They go on to say that they have been subject to criticism while planning the event, but did not give specifics.
Organizers also declined to speak to Radio NL earlier this week, and also did not share their identities.
