A Kamloops city councillor says B.C.’s approach to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the best in North America, if not the best.
Speaking on the NL Morning News, Arjun Singh, a former president at the Union of BC Municipalities – says there is cautious optimism as the province approaches Phase 3 of its Restart Plan.
“We’re opening up again for sure. We’re really happy to be able to do that,” he said. “I don’t want to give people a sense that we may not have to go back. There is a small chance of future closures, but I’m hoping that’s not the case.”
“We’re living in this time now where its not the defined end right now that we know for the pandemic.”
Premier John Horgan has hinted that the province could move to Phase 3 of its plan by next week, once Dr. Bonnie Henry presents new modelling numbers, which is expected on Tuesday.
“Travel is opening up again. We’ll see what impact that has on things,” Singh said. “It’s a really uncertain time in that sense, but as far as the city goes, we really want to try and make sure that we are offering as much of a service as we offered before but we have to do it the most responsible way.”
And even as restrictions are eased, he notes it is important to continue to physical distance, to wash your hands, and stay home if you are sick.
“I think we have to be a little bit nimble… if we follow those things, it should go relatively smoothly,” Singh said.
